Explore the practical guides

Home alarm costs: understand the factors behind a quotation.

Home CCTV costs: compare coverage, recording and installation work.

Wired versus wireless alarms: weigh the options for your property.

CCTV planning checklist: prepare a consistent brief.

Choosing a fire alarm: establish requirements before equipment.

Do you need an alarm, CCTV or both?

An intruder alarm and CCTV have different purposes. An alarm detects events within the specified coverage and produces the agreed alerts. Cameras provide views and recordings of selected locations. Start by identifying the problem you want to address, rather than assuming that one system replaces the other.

If you want to protect entrances while the premises are empty, discuss intruder alarms. If your priority is reviewing what happened at a particular location, consider the views and recording arrangement in a CCTV installation. Where both are useful, ask how they will operate and whether any integration is actually included.

What makes a useful CCTV quotation?

A camera count does not explain what the finished system will show. Discuss the purpose of each view, the distance to the area of interest, lighting and possible obstructions. Ask where recordings are stored, how they are retrieved and who will have access. These practical questions help you compare proposals on their intended use.

Remote viewing needs to be specified rather than assumed. Explain whether you want access from a phone, a computer at the premises or both. If you are upgrading existing cameras, provide the model details where possible and ask which components can be retained. Compatibility needs checking before a reuse plan is agreed.

Preparing for a home security enquiry

Write down the entrances and areas that concern you, along with the household routines the system needs to accommodate. Include pets, regular visitors and whether you want to set part of the home while remaining inside. You do not need to select the equipment yourself before contacting an installer.

For an existing alarm, its make and model can help. Explain whether the concern is operation, coverage or a planned change to the property. Our home security overview describes the planning questions in more detail and explains the initial enquiry and quotation process.

Questions for a business installation

Identify who will open and close the premises, who will manage user access and which areas have different working hours. Include deliveries, shared entrances and any work that must take place outside trading hours. An installation should reflect those routines rather than leave the operating arrangements to be decided afterwards.

Ask what handover is included and which person will administer the system. If an insurer has specified conditions, share them before the proposal is agreed. Our business security page explains how alarms, cameras and access control can be considered together.

Comparing quotations fairly

Check that the quotations cover the same areas and outcomes. Equipment, recording requirements, user controls and any monitoring arrangements should be clear. A lower total may reflect a different scope, so ask about differences before deciding. Avoid assuming that an app notification and an agreed monitoring service are equivalent.

Our accreditations and monitored systems page explains questions to ask about approval scope and monitoring. If fire alarm installation is also required, review that as a distinct part of the project and share the relevant specification with the installer. See our fire alarm installation service for the starting points.

Take the next step

Send your postcode, premises type and a short description of your requirements through our contact page. We first establish whether there is enough information to quote over the phone or whether a free site survey is needed. You then receive a tailored quotation, with installation arranged once you accept the proposal.
