Compare the scope before the total
Two quotations can have different totals because they protect different areas or include different controls. Write down the entrances and rooms you want considered, then check how each proposal addresses them. A lower price is not a like-for-like saving if it leaves out part of the agreed requirement.
Ask for a clear equipment list and description of the work. Identify any assumptions about existing wiring, power or connectivity. The quotation should distinguish what the installer supplies from anything you must arrange separately, so you can compare the actual cost of getting the proposed system working.
Coverage and household operation
The number and type of devices are influenced by the building and how it is used. Explain whether someone stays inside while other areas need protection, and include pets or regular visitors. These details can affect the design and controls required.
A garage or separate workspace should be raised explicitly. Do not assume it is included because it shares the address. Describe its relationship to the main building and any available connections so the installer can assess what work is needed.
Cable routes and existing equipment
Installation effort depends partly on access to suitable routes and the condition of what is already there. During renovation, some routes may be easier to reach before finishes are completed. In an occupied home, preserving decoration may introduce different constraints.

Wired, wireless and hybrid proposals
A wireless proposal may reduce cabling to some devices, but still has mounting, power and other requirements. A wired proposal may make use of suitable existing routes. A hybrid arrangement may combine approaches where the selected equipment supports it.

Separate installation from recurring services
If remote functions or monitoring are included, ask which charges are one-off and which recur. Clarify the provider, agreement terms and what happens if a service is cancelled. Do not infer that a phone notification includes professional alarm handling.

Questions to settle before accepting
Check whether the total includes the applicable VAT, installation, setup and the handover described. Ask what documentation is provided and what warranty terms apply to the specific proposal. If a price is an estimate rather than a quotation, clarify which factors could change it.
For optional extras, request separate prices so you can see their effect on the total. If your budget is limited, explain your priorities and ask how different scopes compare. The aim is an informed choice about coverage, not simply removing items without understanding the consequence.
