Monitored intruder alarm systems

A monitored alarm has an agreed service for handling signals from the premises. We help homeowners and businesses discuss monitored intruder alarm installations, including ECHO-connected arrangements where applicable. The monitoring scope and response conditions should be clear before you proceed.

Start with what should happen after an activation

The first question is who needs to know when the system sends an alarm signal. Some customers want notifications that they will handle themselves; others need an Alarm Receiving Centre service with defined procedures. Explain your expectations, who can attend the premises and whether an insurer has specified conditions.

An equipment quotation should not leave the response arrangements ambiguous. Ask which service is included, who provides it and whether a separate agreement applies. The design of the alarm and the handling of its signals are related, but they are not the same part of the service.

An ARC service is different from a phone notification

An app alert depends on the recipient noticing it and taking action. Professional monitoring involves an Alarm Receiving Centre, often shortened to ARC, and agreed handling procedures. Ask which signals are covered and how nominated contacts are used, rather than assuming that every type of system message results in the same response.

Contact details and responsibilities need to stay current. Identify who is authorised to discuss the account and who can respond to a call about the premises. If your staffing or household arrangements change, make sure the service provider’s process for updating those details is understood.

Where ECHO fits into the arrangement

ECHO supports electronic alarm messaging between participating ARCs and emergency services. The signal from the premises first reaches the ARC through the specified signalling arrangement. ECHO concerns the onward electronic handling for eligible alarms; it is not simply a different name for the connection between your alarm and your mobile phone.

Our accreditations page explains the distinction and links to the official ECHO information. We supply and install ECHO-connected monitored systems. The quotation and service arrangements should identify what is proposed for your premises, including any eligibility requirements.

Understand the conditions attached to response

Police response is not an unconditional promise that an officer will attend every activation. Eligibility, alarm handling and the applicable response arrangements matter. Ask for these conditions to be explained as part of the proposal so that the service you are selecting matches your expectations.

Where insurance requirements apply, send the wording before accepting a quotation. Do not assume that a generic statement about a monitored alarm satisfies a particular policy condition. Our team can discuss the proposed scope and relevant approval information, while the insurer can clarify its own requirements where necessary.

Existing alarms and changes of service

If your premises already have a monitored system, provide the available equipment and service details. Whether the existing alarm can be retained depends on its condition, compatibility and the proposed arrangement. Explain why you want to change, such as a move into the premises or a revised operational requirement.

Avoid assuming that an existing agreement can be transferred or ended without checking its terms. Discuss how any change will be coordinated so that responsibilities are clear. The planned installation, communications arrangement and start of the new service need to be understood together before the work proceeds.

Arrange a tailored quotation

For a business, include opening hours, keyholder arrangements and any areas used outside normal hours. For a home, explain who will receive notifications and whether the property is sometimes unoccupied for longer periods. Our commercial intruder alarm and home security pages provide related planning information.

Send your postcode and requirements through our contact page. We determine whether we can quote over the phone or need a free site survey. A tailored quotation follows once the requirements are established, and installation is arranged after you agree to proceed.

Your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Does monitoring come with every burglar alarm?

No. It must be specified and agreed. Check whether a proposal includes app notifications, professional monitoring or both.

Will every activation result in police attendance?

No. Response is subject to eligibility and applicable handling and response arrangements. Ask for the conditions relevant to the proposed service.

Can a monitored alarm be installed at a home?

We can discuss monitored systems for homes as well as businesses. The premises, equipment and required service determine the proposal.
