Start with the views you need
List the places you want to see and what each view should establish. A driveway overview has a different purpose from a close view at the door. The distance, position and available lighting can affect the equipment proposed.
A quotation with fewer cameras may cover a different scope, not the same scope more efficiently. Ask the installer to explain the purpose of each position. Consider vehicles, gates and planting that may obstruct views during everyday use rather than judging only an unobstructed daytime scene.
Equipment and recording are linked
A camera needs a recording and access arrangement suited to the intended use. Ask what recorder or storage is included, how recordings will be found and what capacity is proposed. The recording period depends on equipment and settings, so clarify the intended result.
Do not compare storage figures independently from the rest of the specification. A proposal should explain the arrangement as a whole. Our home CCTV service considers views and recording together rather than treating the recorder as an unspecified extra.
Installation access affects the work
Mounting positions and cable routes influence the installation effort. Tell the installer about access restrictions, finishes you want preserved and any other building work underway. A route that is available during refurbishment may be difficult to reach afterwards.
Explain who can approve equipment on shared or external areas. If another party needs to authorise changes, resolve that before relying on the quoted positions. A price based on an assumed route may need reconsideration if permission or access is unavailable.
Remote viewing and user access
If you want to view cameras remotely, include that requirement in the brief. Ask which equipment and connectivity are needed and whether any ongoing service charges apply. Do not assume every function is included because the system has an app.
Identify who will administer users and retrieve footage. Setup and a useful handover should be described in the quotation. The ability to find and retrieve a recording matters as much as seeing a live picture on the day of installation.
Replacing or extending an existing system
An upgrade might retain some cabling or equipment, but only where it is suitable. Provide model details and explain the problem you want to solve. The issue may be the camera view, recording access or a new area needing coverage.
Ask which components are retained and which are replaced. Compatibility, capacity and condition determine whether reuse is practical. Avoid treating an extension quotation as equivalent to a complete new installation without understanding what each includes.
Check the full price and exclusions
Confirm whether the quoted total includes applicable VAT, mounting, cabling, recording equipment and agreed setup. Ask what is excluded and what work relies on services or equipment you provide. Clarify any warranty and recurring charges for the exact proposal.
